Excellence in Performance and Teaching
Lauded by Canada’s German-language periodical Das Journal for his “warm, elegant playing”, Cesar Palacio is an American orchestral clarinetist and music educator of Colombian and Peruvian descent. Mr. Palacio currently holds the position of 3rd and Bass Clarinet with the Phoenix Symphony, and will join the Louisville Orchestra in summer of 2025 as the ensemble’s new Bass and Utility Clarinetist.
An accomplished orchestral musician, Mr. Palacio has performed with such distinguished ensembles as the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, Sarasota Orchestra, Aspen Festival Orchestra, AMICI Ensemble, New World Symphony, and as former acting Second/Bass Clarinet for the Niagara Symphony Orchestra. He has additionally appeared as guest principal clarinet with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, Sarasota Orchestra, and Niagara Symphony Orchestra. Past summer festival engagements include the Banff Festival, Marrowstone Festival, Round Top Music Festival, AIMS Opera Festival in Graz, and Aspen Music Festival, where he served as Bass Clarinet Fellow for the 2020-2022 seasons. A Texas native, Mr. Palacio is an alumnus of the Greater Dallas Youth Orchestra.
During the course of his orchestral career, Mr. Palacio has performed under the direction of many celebrated conductors including Sir Andrew Davis, Marin Alsop, Peter Oundjian, Karen Kamensek, Robert Spano, Miguel Harth-Bedoya, James Conlon, Sarah Hicks, Bramwell Tovey, Tito Muñoz, and Ludovic Morlot. He has shared the stage with such acclaimed artists as Gil Shaham, Leon Fleischer, Augustin Hadelich, Time for Three, Renee Fleming, Sir Bryn Terfel, Stephen Schwartz, The Marcus Roberts Trio, and Branford Marsalis.
Mr. Palacio’s performances have been broadcast via such radio stations as AZPBS, CBC Radio, KBACH, KNAU, WCLV, WQXR, and WRR. He can be heard on the inaugural recording of Matthew Hindson’s Flute Concerto “House Music”, with the Oberlin Orchestra and soloist Alexa Still, as well as the original soundtrack of Paul Thompson’s children’s musical “A Place in the Castle”. Aside from classical performances, Mr. Palacio has performed in numerous regional productions of Broadway musicals, including: 42nd Street, Into the Woods, The Drowsy Chaperone, Cinderella, Singin in the Rain, Peter Pan, Man of La Mancha, Company, Hello Dolly, The Sound of Music and The Music Man on assorted clarinets, saxophones, and flute. In the summer of 2022, Mr. Palacio served as principal clarinet for Theatre Aspen’s production of Rogers and Hammerstein’s The Sound of Music, starring Broadway’s Christy Altomare as Maria and Grammy Award Winner Ana María Martínez as the Mother Abbess.
An enthusiastic music educator, Mr. Palacio has taught clarinet lessons at Oberlin College, Oberlin Community Music School, and Yale University. He has coached sectionals and presented masterclasses for young musicians from the University of Toronto, Yale Symphony Orchestra, Glendale College, Niagara Youth Symphony, and Panama’s National Youth Orchestra. Mr. Palacio also served as a guest artist and lecturing faculty for the 2021 Muestra Internacional de Clarinetes en Panamá (MICLAP) Festival hosted by the University of Panamá. During summer of 2022 he served as a clarinet and saxophone instructor for the Aspen Music Festival’s P.A.L.S. music education outreach initiative.
Mr. Palacio is a Sphinx Organization NAAS Artist and proud alumnus of Oberlin College and Conservatory’s prestigious Double-Degree Program, with studies in History and Clarinet performance. He holds an Artist Diploma from Toronto’s Glenn Gould School of The Royal Conservatory of Music and a Master’s degree from the Yale School of Music. He also completed one year of doctoral studies and teaching assistantships at the University of Toronto Faculty of Music in 2021-2022. Past influential teachers include Richard Hawkins, Joaquin Valdepeñas, and David Shifrin.
Apart from his musical endeavors, Mr. Palacio enjoys Asian cuisine, weightlifting, vintage video games, cartoons, podcasts, and documentaries.
